How to Throw the Ultimate Game of Thrones Watch Party
By: Srikala Appana
As the final season of Game of Thrones is wrapping up, I feel the responsibility to “end my watch” honorably. I put this simple yet creative small-bites menu together (with brand recommendations, extra menu items, and décor ideas!) so you can host the #GreatestPartyEverThrone!
Rhaegarlic Naan and Hummus Recipe
2 cans chickpeas, drained
1 bunch cilantro, clean and roughly chopped
3-4 garlic pods
1/3 cup tahini
1 teaspoon salt
1 red onion
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
½ teaspoon tikka masala
Naan or pita bread
Blend together the chickpeas, cilantro, jalapenos, garlic, tahini, and ½ teaspoon salt until smooth and creamy. In a frying pan on medium heat, heat the oil. Add the onion and salt, and caramelize (cook till the onions are translucent and soft). Add the tikka masala, mix well, and remove from heat. Transfer the hummus to a serving dish, and top off with the onions (do not mix in). Serve with warm and toasty naan or pita bread.
I recommend: Trader Joe’s tahini and garlic naan; Patak’s Tikka Masala paste.
An Ode to Brienne of Tart Apples
1 brie wheel
1 ½ tablespoons dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon cold butter
1 tablespoon chopped walnuts
2 Granny Smith apples
Preheat the oven to 350 F. Slice the brie wheel in half horizontally, so you have two “sandwich halves.” Place one into a baking dish and sprinkle with half of the sugar. Place the second on top and sprinkle the remaining sugar on it. Chop up the butter into small chunks and top off the cheese, along with the walnuts. Bake for 20-25 minutes, and serve with the apple slices!
I recommend: Trader Joe’s Goat Cheese and Brie.
Spears of the Unsullied
1 pound okra
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
½ teaspoon amchur powder
A pinch of red chili powder
Preheat the oven to 425 F. Make sure to use clean but dry okra. Make long slices (each okra should be cut into 4 long quarters). Place on a foil-lined baking sheet in a single layer and sprinkle with the salt. Combine the remaining seasonings with the oil and brush onto the okra slices. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until lightly browned.
Casterly Rock Cheeseball
8 ounces each of cream cheese and shredded sharp white cheddar
1 bunch of chives, finely chopped
½ cup each of dried cranberries and slivered almonds
In a bowl, mix together the cream cheese, cheddar, and half of the chives until even throughout. It’s harder to mix but works best when the cream cheese is cold, straight out of the fridge. Form into a ball, cover in saran wrap, and freeze for 20 minutes. In the meantime, combine the almonds, cranberries, and the rest of the chives. After 20 minutes, remove the cheeseball from the freezer and coat the exterior with the cranberry-almond-chive mixture. You will have to gently press the toppings into the cheese. Use any extra you may have as a bedding around the cheeseball when serving with the crackers.
I recommend: Philadelphia cream cheese.
8 ounces each of mascarpone, cream cheese, and heavy whipping cream
½ cup sugar
2 tablespoons freshly made coffee
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder or crushed chocolate chips
Whip the mascarpone, cream cheese, and sugar for 2-3 minutes. Add whipping cream, coffee, and ½ tablespoon cocoa powder or crushed chocolate chips. Whip again until light and fluffy (about 6 minutes). Dust with the remaining cocoa powder or crushed chocolate chips, and serve with ladyfinger cookies.
I recommend: Cafe Bustelo Coffee and Ghirardelli cocoa or chocolate chips.
