How to Stay Active While Traveling

How to Stay Active While Traveling

By: Karishma Kapur

Let’s admit it: whenever we go on vacation, we want to relax, explore new towns, eat a lot, have a couple of drinks with friends and not have to worry about “being healthy” or “sticking to our diet.” But then you come back from your vacation and it all hits you: you’re feeling bloated, hungover and out of shape. You think to yourself, “How was I ever going to be able to work out on vacation!? There were no gyms!”

While it’s important to give yourself a break once in a while, there are ways you can still stay active while being on a vacation with minimal effort! Here are a couple of tips:

  1. Pack sneaks and 1-2 workout outfits. Even if you’re only going for a long weekend and you’ve planned a lot of fun activities at least you’ll have the workout clothes with you! Seeing your clothes may also help motivate and remind you to stay active.

  2. Wear your Fitbit or smartwatch while traveling. Both Fitbits and smartwatches have reminders to get you moving and you can count how many steps you’re taking. You don’t have to go crazy, but set a small goal for yourself every day. Having a smaller goal of 5-10K rather than 10K+ will provide you with a realistic goal and keep you accountable. If you’re feeling ambitious, get the healthy 10K minimum steps in per day!

  3. Do an easy YouTube or fitness app workout. Don’t have a gym? Staying in an Airbnb? Don’t fret! Lots of YouTube videos and apps like Fitness Blender, XHIIT, Nike app have a ton of at-home or no equipment workout. Take 10-30 mins in the morning while your friends sleep or shower, to fit in a quick workout.. This way you’re not making people wait for you and you can squeeze in an easy workout!

  4. Find a buddy! Working out is always easier with a friend!  If you plan from the beginning to work out for 1-2 days on your trip, ask a friend ahead of time and tell them you might want to work out together. Then, the friend can plan to bring clothes as well and they will help you commit to those quick morning workouts in the morning. Working out is always easier with a friend!

  5. If you’re exploring a new city, go for a quick run or active walk. Look on Google for running routes in the city and explore the city while sweating! This can be a quick 1-mile jog or even a 2-3 mile walk gossiping with friends.

  6. Get in a good morning stretch! Wake up, do some yoga and relax your mind for the day. This will help you have a great active approach for the day and help maintain the active mindset throughout the day.

  7. And of course - try to walk everywhere!Choose to walk to places rather than taking a taxi or Uber! On vacation, it can be easy to go for a long walk on the beach or to walk from one part of the city to another. Keep on walking and get those steps in!

You don’t have to do all of these, especially not on vacation. The biggest tip I can give is to make sure you enjoy yourself while you’re on vacation. These quick tips are supposed to make you feel good and balanced on vacation. But if you’re really not feeling up to it, make sure you’re at least walking. Making time to exercise on vacation is totally doable to make sure you feel like you’re balancing out the fun!
