Perfecting Your Skincare Routine: Part 3

Developing a Daytime & Nighttime Skincare Routine

Now that you know what types of skincare products to buy for your skin’s needs from Part 1 and  Part 2, of this series, let’s learn how to use them all together to fully reap the benefits of each product’s ingredients. In this part, we’ll cover how to layer your skincare products in the correct order, as well as the types of products you should use for our daytime routine vs. your nighttime routine.

Layering Skincare Products

Applying your skincare products in the right order is incredibly important to ensure the ingredients from your products can properly penetrate your skin and work their magic. Otherwise, you won’t see any results from your skincare regimen.

A good rule of thumb is to apply your products from thinnest to thickest consistency. In general, you want to first layer products with ingredients that are most important to penetrate into the skin (like antioxidant serums), and finish with products that need to sit on top of the skin (like moisturizers).

What I do: The following is the typical order in which I like to apply my skincare products.

  1. Cleanser

  2. Toner

  3. Serum (Anti-oxidant during the day, retinol at night)

  4. Eye Cream

  5. Moisturizer

  6. Sunscreen (during the day)

Daytime vs. Nighttime Routine

It’s also important that your daytime and nighttime skincare routines are slightly different because your skin is exposed to completely different things. During the day, your skin is exposed to the sun and various impurities, such as pollutants, makeup, and dirt, so the primary focus of your daytime skincare routine should protecting it from sun damage.

During the night, your skin is only exposed to your pillowcase, so your biggest focus for your nighttime skincare routine should be to give your skin the right ingredients to repair itself while you sleep.

What I do: For my daytime routine, I focus on simply cleansing, moisturizing and adding sunscreen to my face. I avoid using any sort of acid or exfoliator during the day, as it can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage. During the night, I add exfoliators, retinol or hydrating masks to my routine to give my skin some extra T.L.C.

My Daytime Routine

  1. Water cleanse with Whamisa’s Green Tea Cleansing Gel

  2. Tone with Son & Park’s Beauty Water using a cotton pad

    • Toners get residual makeup off your face and balance the pH of your skin, allowing skincare products to absorb more effectively

  3. Apply Maelove’s Glow Maker serum as per directions on the package

  4. Apply Ole Henricksen’s Banana Bright Eye Cream

  5. Moisturize with Stratia’s Liquid Gold

  6. Protect and prime makeup with Maelove’s Sun Protector

  7. Apply makeup

My Nighttime Routine

  1. Oil cleanse with Farmacy’s Green Clean

  2. Water cleanse with Whamisa’s Green Tea Cleansing Gel

  3. Tone with Son & Park’s Beauty Water using a cotton pad

  4. Apply Honest Beauty Pure Retinol Serum.

  5. Optional: Apply Mega Greens Galaxy Pack (1-2x a week) to open pores, absorb oil and draw out impurities.

  6. Apply Ole Henricksen’s Banana Bright Eye Cream.

  7. Moisturize with a thick layer of Summer Friday’s Jet Lag Mask for extra hydration overnight.

  8. Hydrate with Honest Beauty’s Elevated Hydration Mist
