Time flies - February is already over! Before we know it, Spring will have sprung, which means the newest patterns, colors, and trends will be debuted; this phenomenon is known as Fashion Week. I know some of you may think to yourself, “new trends and style? Should I be following and dressing according to seasons? Why would anyone care about this?”
The simple answer is- not everyone will care. Many people do not care about trends or seasons. There are others that strongly feel black is the only color, trend, style they need because black is ALWAYS in season. However, there will be a few of you like to keep up with fashion and would like to know what is the next big thing. If you are into fashion, or are looking to get started, you have come to the right place.
Let’s look at a few of the patterns that will be heavily embraced by the fashion world come Spring.
Everywhere you look you will see all things animal. Prints include Cheetah, leopard (yes, they are actually different patterns and colors that distinguish the two), zebra, tiger, cowhide, and snake print. You can partake in this trend by being bold and grabbing an entire outfit, or being subtle and having a purse, shoes, or even socks.
I hate to say this, but neon is the new black, or definitely trying to be. From purses and socks to full articles of clothing, a touch of neon will be seen everywhere this upcoming Spring.
There will be a heavy emphasis on the color coral. Pantone announced Living Coral as the color of the year and describes it as “An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.”
Now that we know what colors and patterns to look for, let’s talk about what articles of clothing we should seek out!
Hippie style is back! Hippie style can also be referred to as “gypsy style” or “boho” -- the vibes are easygoing and nonchalant. Hippie style has been around for ages, but this season, it will be modernized. Previously hippie styles had paisley prints, maxi dresses, flowy tops. This season they will have crochet tops, bags, bathing suit cover-ups, kimonos, etc. The flowy theme will still be encompassed, but now it will be chic, or bohemian chic, if you will. You will see flowy blazers, flowy but structured pants, paisley print kimonos, and various blazers. One can look upbeat, yet feel comfortable while wearing this trend.
Never thought I would say this, but heels take a seat - flats are back. That being said, they are coming back with a fancy twist. Think bold prints and colors embellished with bows, glitter, rhinestones, and buckles!
Who would have thought shorts could be a sensible length, yet fashionable? Well, surprise! Previously shorts have gotten shorter and shorter and almost never appropriate to be worn anywhere without getting glares. During the summer, if you haven’t at least once burned your behind while getting into your hot car with leather seats, you honestly don’t know what pain is. Or have your shorts ever been so short that you can’t even walk quickly or they ride up, giving you that ultimate wedgie? Sensible shorts are here to save the day. You have already seen biker shorts everywhere last year- but this year’s shorts will be tailored, knee-length and looser.
Fringe is in! Fringe is described as a border on the ends of clothing. It’s usually made up of pieces of thread, strips, or cords. Fringe was popular in the 1920s among flappers. This year, you will be seeing fringe on everything -- tops, pants, accessories, outerwear and even shoes!
If anyone watched the Golden Globes 2019, you already know about this next trend. Sequins are back (as if they could ever truly go out of style). Sequin dresses, tops, sweaters, bottoms -- you name it! Trying to incorporate sequins into your everyday life can get tricky but not impossible. The glamorous Edith Head once said, “Some people need sequins, others don’t.” If you’re one of those people that like sparkles, I believe you will find a way to wear it on a “normal” day no matter what!
Being up-to-date with fashion should never be confused with being labeled as materialistic, just as not giving a care in the world about fashion doesn’t make one stuck-up or arrogant. As Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” Remember to know who you are and be true to yourself!
