How do you really feel about Valentine’s Day gifts? Are you excited or is it a lot of pressure?
Mystery Man: I feel a lot of pressure to get or do the right thing. I get excited and nervous thinking about your reaction. Getting gifts is always exciting though.
What do you, as a guy, want for Valentine’s Day in terms of gifts?
Mystery Man: If I wasn't single, I'd like events over material gifts. Plan a trip somewhere or get tickets to a concert. That'd be ideal because you're enjoying the gift together.
Do you get a guy or girl you’ve been seeing, but not officially dating, something?
Mystery Man: It depends. If you're into them and could see it going further, then I'd say shoot your shot. Don't splurge on them (save that for when you're actually dating someone) but definitely get them something that would catch them off guard. However, if you don't see it going further than a hook up doesn't get them anything since that would send mixed signals.
What is the best Valentine’s Day date (or any date) you’ve been on?
Mystery Man: First dates. There's always that tension there where both people are trying not to do anything to would fuck it up. I can't say I've been on too many dates with someone I've been serious about and in an established relationship with so I can't speak from that side of things. I'm curious to know whether dates later on in a relationship are as fun as the first few.
What is the worst Valentine’s Day date (or any date) you’ve been on?
Mystery Man: Catfished via Coffee Meets Bagel. We met up for drinks in a really dark English bar. She texted me telling me she was there. I walk in and I'm confused because I don't see anyone that looks like the pics in her profile. There were maybe five people there, so I couldn't have missed her, right? I pull out my phone about to text her when all of a sudden I hear, "Hey!" I turn around and there she is with her recently dyed blonde, blue, and pink hair. I guess people using five-year-old pics is a risk you take when swiping right. I realized I made a huge mistake when the first thing she ordered was a glass of fireball to sip on. I'm not the best at getting out of situations like this, so I stayed and racked up a high bar tab which she claimed she didn't have the money to split. On top of all that she told me she only came because she assumed I was a fuck boy from the way I looked and just wanted to fuck with me. She obviously didn't get invited back.
How do you flip the switch with the guy you have a crush on during Valentine's Day? Is it a day where things can become official?
Mystery Man: This is a hard question.I'd say shoot your shot as well, but you don't necessarily have to make it official. Half the fun of getting into a relationship is the build up before it. Do something subtle that'll leave them thinking about you. That way you'll get a better feel for what they're thinking by their reaction. Worst case scenario - you realize they're not into you so you move on without a full-blown rejection. Best case scenario - you build tension until one of you makes a move.
What do you look for in a girl?
Mystery Man: Someone smart, ambitious, pretty, and fit. Someone that shows that they want to get to know me too. I don't want someone that lets me lead ALL the time. There should be 50/50 split in who's making the effort to ask deeper questions. I’m also open to a model type.
