Surviving a 3-Day Juice Cleanse

Surviving a 3-Day Juice Cleanse

By: Trisha Patel

Do you ever feel like you need a kick-start to a healthier lifestyle? Or do you need a way to detoxify your body after a weekend of binge eating? A juice cleanse might just be what you need. Here are some tips on what to expect during a 3-day juice cleanse.

Full Disclosure: Juice cleanses are controversial and not for everyone. However, with the proper research and preparation, it is definitely achievable and extremely rewarding.

Cleanse Prep:

  1. Pick your cleanse. Based on your goal for the cleanse below are things to keep in mind:

    1. Looking to lose weight? Choose juices that are low in sugar/fruit content. (2 sweet and 4 green/ day).

    2. Looking to detox? Make sure juices are non-GMO and organic.

  2. Gather your juices. There are many different options out there. You can make them yourself or buy them from a local shop or online. Buying them can get pretty pricey. However, if you can swing it, I do recommend purchasing because the fact that you made the investment can be motivation in itself.

  3. Plan your days.  Your energy level will be low throughout the cleanse and you may experience some bodily (bowel) changes in the beginning and end. It is best to do the cleanse on days where you do not have a lot going on and conserve your energy wherever you can.  A long weekend would be ideal. If that is not possible, try to do 1 work day and 2 off days (ex. Friday - Sunday). The first day is usually the easiest to give in to temptations. Work/school will help create a diversion.

  4. Toss your leftovers. Cleaning out your fridge will reduce the temptation of cheating. If you do feel you need more substance as an energy boost during the cleanse, buy a bag of carrots or mini peppers. This way, even if you do need to eat something, it can be something healthy and you can continue with the cleanse.

  5. Eat a hearty, high protein dinner the night before your cleanse. You want to feel full and satisfied with the meal that you are eating the night before your cleanse. Having a good dinner the night before will help you get through the first day of the cleanse (ex. bowl of pasta or a sandwich).

Cleanse Survival Tips:

  1. Start each day with a large glass of water with lemon in it and drink LOTS of water throughout the cleanse.

  2. Stay on schedule. If your cleanse has a set schedule, stick to it. If not, make up your own (Ex. If you get 6 Juices/Day, drink one every 2 hours. 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm).

  3. Don’t chug. Drinking your juices slowly will reduce temptations to eat something during your downtime.

  4. Dilute strong juices. There are times when juices won’t sit well in your stomach. One reason could be because they are more acidic than what you are used to. Add some water to the juice and drink it slowly.

  5. Drink sweet drinks earlier in the day. The last thing you’ll want is to be tossing and turning from a sugar rush when you are ready to go to bed.

  6. Drink lots of water and stock up on decaffeinated tea. It is possible to get dehydrated on a juice cleanse. Teas will help mix things up and will be a nice way to wind down each day.

  7. Listen to your body. If you are not feeling well and start feeling symptoms that are alarming, do not force yourself to continue the cleanse. First, try to eat a few carrots or peppers and see how you feel before you throw in the towel. That pick-me-up may be just what you need to continue the cleanse.

  8. If you are a regular coffee drinker, have 1 cup of black coffee in the morning. The last thing you will want is to be hit with not only the effects of the cleanse but also the effects of going cold turkey on caffeine. If you are really looking to cut out all caffeine during the cleanse, try tapering your usage before the cleanse so you are ready to go during it.

  9. Anticipate your day-to-day challenges

Day 1 - Hunger and Temptations

  • Light activities (Netflix, cleaning, reading, etc.)

  • Keep moving

  • Stay away from cable (90% of commercials are about food. I learned the hard way)

Day 2 - Low Energy and Mood Swings (Most Difficult Day)

  • Minimize workload

  • Pamper yourself (spa, sauna, massage, etc.)

  • Go to bed early

Day 3 - Low Energy and Grumbling Stomach (Easiest Day)

  • Relaxing activities (walk, yoga, etc.)

  • Begin planning your days following the cleanse. You might be fantasizing about your first meal following the cleanse. However, you did the cleanse for a reason. Continue the healthy lifestyle by choosing foods that are tasty, healthy and natural.

A 3-day juice cleanse can be very beneficial and just what you need in order to kick-start a healthier lifestyle. While there will be ups and downs, the end result will be extremely rewarding and you will feel lighter and more energized than ever!
